The Rockets were founded in 1967 in San Diego, and after being bought by Robert Breitbard for US$1.75 million, they joined the NBA as an expansion team for the 1967-68 NBA season. The resulting contest to name the franchise chose the name "Rockets", homaging San Diego's theme of "a city in motion" and the local arm of General Dynamics developing the atlas missile and booster rocket program .
